Lettera aperta al Presidente Barack Obama
Compiacendomi della Sua rielezione a Presidente degli Stati Uniti d’America, vengo, con questa mia a sollecitare la Sua attenzione nei confronti della mia città che versa in cattive acque. Non so se conosce Siena, un’antica città della Toscana, una volta Repubblica indipendente, poi passata nel Granducato di Toscana, poi incorporata nel Regno d’Italia. Vanto della città era l’Ateneo, forse il secondo del mondo dopo l’Alma Mater di Bologna, un centro di studi da quale sono usciti fior di giuristi, letterati, medici e scienziati, oggi fortemente indebitato (ma che vuoi che sia!). Il palazzo comunale, esempio di gotico laico, oggi abitato dal Commissario prefettizio a causa di una situazione debitoria che ha fatto salire vertiginosamente l’imposizione fiscale locale per il pareggio di bilancio (ma che vuoi che sia) c’era una banca,la più antica del mondo, che fino al 2006 aveva una delle più floride capitalizzazioni d’Europa ma oggi ha il titolo azionario pari a 0,23 euro( ma che vuoi che sia). Un ospedale che aveva delle eccellenze, per esempio in oculistica, che oggi ha perduto qualità (ma c’è). Ecco in mezzo alle opere d’arte a cielo aperto vi sono esempi d’arte contemporanea che hanno alimentato il prestigio cittadino: il quartiere di S. Miniato, l’edifico lineare, il nuovo edificio di viale Sardegna, il circling della Colonna di S. Marco, il quartiere ecologico di Malizia, etc. tutte opere segno della lungimiranza dei governi locali che si sono succeduti. La città è un esempio di democrazia: da circa 70 anni vi è la stessa maggioranza al governo, segno di stabilità e di convergenza d’interessi per l’interesse collettivo. Una volta c’erano anche le industrie, farmaceutiche, dolciarie ed elettroniche, ma oggi non ci sono più. Ecco Presidente saremmo tutti felici se venisse a festeggiare la Sua rielezione qui da noi, nella nostra ridente cittadina. Veda il viaggio come una luna di miele in una città da sogno. Del resto lo è! Chissà che non ci aiuti con le situazioni debitorie in cui ci troviamo e, magari chissà che la Sua presenza non faccia da traino per il turismo.

Delighting in his re-election as President of the United States of America, I should appreciate your attention towards my city which is between Scylla and Caribdes. I do not know if you know Siena, an ancient city in Tuscany, once an independent republic, then moved in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, later incorporated into the Kingdom of Italy. Pride of the city was the University, perhaps the world’s second after the Alma Mater of Bologna, a center for studies where some fine lawyers, writers, doctors and scientists, now heavily in debt (but it does not matter!) . The town hall, an example of secular Gothic, now occupied by the Prefectural Commissioner because of a debt situation that did soar local taxation to balance the budget (but it does not matter), there was a bank, the more oldest in the world, which until 2006 had one of the most prosperous capitalization of Europe, but today the share of 0.23 euro (but it does not matter). A hospital that had of excellence, for example in ophthalmology, which today has lost quality (but there is). Here in the midst of the works of art in the open, there are examples of contemporary art that have fueled the national prestige: the neighborhood of S. Miniato, the linear building, the new building of Viale Sardegna, the circling of the Column of St. Marco, the district ecological Malizia, etc.. all works sign of foresight of local governments that have followed. The city is an example of democracy for about 70 years there is the same majority government, a sign of stability and convergence of interests to the collective interest.
